Local arrangement: Betsudan Lab., Kanazawa Institute of Technology 7. Session title: “Radio Waves in Space Science and Engineering” 8. Presentation: 60 min including Q&A for each speaker (a) “Historical review of antenna R&D
for satellites, earth stations and radio astronomical
observatories” (b) “Space and earth observation with
millimeter-wave and sub-millimeter-wave” (c) “Historical review and prospect of
satellite communications” 9. Reception Venue: Hotel Tawaraya “Shirasagi-yu”, Yamanaka Onsen, Ishikawa, Japan Attendees: 19 persons 10. The steering committee meeting took place from 9:00 to 11:00 on January 29, 2005. 11. Concluding Remarks (a) This scientific workshop was organized based on the key concept of “Radio Waves in Space Science and Engineering.” Three invited speakers gave us technical and historical reviews of various R&D for satellites / earth stations / radio observatories. During the session, we had a very active discussion on future vision of space development programs in Japan. The meeting was very successful with 25 attendees. (b) Since the Q&A was very active and the time slot was limited, the last speaker could not have enough time for his presentation.

The 6th scientific workshop presented by the 19th URSI-C in Japan
1. Convener: Dr. Atsushi Sanada, Yamaguchi University 2. Date/time: 13:00 -16:45, May 13, 2005 3. Venue: Laboratory of Nanoelectronics and Spintronics, Research Institute of Electrical Communication, Tohoku University (Sendai, Japan) 4. Registration fee: Free 5. Listed attendees: 36 persons 6. Local arrangement: Prof. Koji Mizuno's Lab., Research Institute of Electrical Communication, Tohoku University 7. Session title: “Radio Waves and Biology” 8. Presentation: 60 min including Q&A for each speaker (a) “Radio Waves and Human Bodies (communication and medical treatment)” Speaker: Prof. Koichi Itoh, Chiba University (b) “Radio Waves and Non-Invasive
Measurements” (c) “Radio Wave Absorption by Human bodies
(Measurement Standardization and Numerical
Techniques)” (d) “Radio Waves and
Fruits” 9. Banquet Venue: Iwanumaya, Sendai, Japan Attendees: 16 persons 10. The steering committee meeting took place from 8:50 to 9:50 on May 14, 2005. 11. Concluding Remarks This sixth scientific workshop was entitled "Radio Waves and Biology” and was the first cosponsored workshop with the URSI-K group. A diverse range of applications from medical issue and standardizations were presented by the front-line researchers in the field, and there was a fruitful gathering of participants both from the medical application and communication fields. The topics included technical issues of radio waves on ubiquitous communication and medical treatment, radio waves and non-invasive biological measurements, political issues on measurement standardization and numerical techniques, and botanical measurements of fruits by radio waves. Intensive discussions on this field of radio wave applications were held with discerning questions, and the meeting was a big success.

The
steering committee meeting took place from 8:50
to 9:50
on Sept.
3rd, 2005 11. Concluding Remarks This
workshop was entitled "Radio wave and compound device", and the radio wave
application of the compound semiconductor transistor was presented
especially. The relation between the person and the corporate strategy to
spread the technology as a product is talked about besides a technical
story of the device. Technology trend of high-voltage device and
low-voltage device was told. And some of practical application for
satellite was presented. The person who related to various processes of
the device participated in the workshop. At the banquet, the relation
between the device technology and the crystal production in the Yamanashi
area became a topic and it was interesting.

11. Concluding Remarks
This workshop has covered a wide range of topics from fundamentals to applications of microwave materials by active researchers in the field. Professor Awai has presented an intuitive explanation of physics and characteristics of microwave ferrimagnetic materials and Professor Hashimoto has also presented novel trends and examples of microwave absorber applications, which is quite interesting and informative for audience. A talk on a hot topic on physics and properties of left-handed materials has been given by myself in the rump session with more than one hour extension, resulting in precious and fruitful discussions. It is unfortunate that the first talk on microwave dielectric materials by Dr. Tamura has been canceled. By courtesy of Professors Awai and Zhang, a one day Biwako Lake tour program has been took place the next day with six attendees. It has gone smoothly through the day and has helped for exchanging information and mutual friendship.
