1. Research Project
(R-1) NOZOMI
The NOZOMI spacecraft, carrying the instruments for
plasma wave measurements in ELF/VLF/MF/HF bands and sounder experiments, is on
the cruising orbit to Mars. The insertion to the Martian orbit is scheduled in
January 2004.
(R-2) GEOTAIL
The GEOTAIL
spacecraft has been operated without any major troubles. The spacecraft is
expected to be in a good condition at least until the next long eclipse in
2002.
(R-3) EXOS-D
The EXOS-D (Akebono) spacecraft has attained the 12 years of
successful operation without any major troubles. The regular data acquisition is
continued at stations in
(R-4) Balloon experiment in
NIPR is planning to carry out a
long-duration balloon experiment to be done during late December in 2002 to
middle February in 2003. Four Zero-pressure stratospheric balloons will be
launched from Syowa Station, one for cosmic ray and 3 for upper atmosphere
physics observation including magnetospheric electrodynamics and wave phenomena.
In the latter experiment, the balloons installed with identical instruments will
be launched successively to form a formation flight in order to separate the
spatial and temporal variations of the phenomena occurring in the boundary
regions in the magnetosphere. It will take 20-30 days for the balloon to make a
circum-polar flight.
(R-5) ELF wave observation at Syowa
station,
ELF magnetic field observations in the frequency range of 1-500 Hz have been carried out at Syowa station since February 2000, using two horizontal search coil magnetometers. Good waveform of ELF transients were observed in correspondence with sprites and elves identified in the northern hemisphere.
(R-6) HF and MF radars at Syowa Station,
HF
and MF radars at Syowa Station are operated continuously in good
condition.
